A little background on badminton

I’ve been playing badminton for 3-4 weeks now but I still haven’t got a clue as to its history. Here’s what I gathered.

Badminton is a sport played indoors by two or four players. Players use rackets to hit a shuttlecock, sometimes called a shuttle or “bird”, back and forth over a net over 1.5 meters high. The shuttlecock is made of cork stuck with feathers and weights approximately 5 grams. It normally consist of 14-16 goose feathers.

Badminton was based on a game of battledore and shuttlecock, a popular ancient game. It is not known whether the modern game of badminton began in India or England but the game got its name from the Duke of Beaufort’s estate, Badminton, in Gloucestershire. The first rules of the game were drawn up in Karachi in 1877.
