My Friday The 13th
Just when I think I can get back on coding after bug hunting for a two days, my laptop conked. I can’t use my other two PCs, aside from them being too old and slow, they only have text consoles. Not really good even for data storage but that’s how I use them.
Anyway, I’m using a lightweight derivative of Ubuntu 6.06 Xubuntu because the regular Ubuntu 6.06 locks up after I login. This past two weeks I was having random kernel panic and Segmentation fault messages on boot up and sometimes, it won’t even get past the stage1.5 grub prompt.
Yesterday, for two hours of force on/off cycle and booting from a livecd, the damn laptop won’t respond. Since my data are in a separate HDD - thank God - I proceed to reinstall Ubuntu Dapper (forgot where I put the xubuntu cd). Whatever I do, the screen just locks up after the login.
I dugged deeper in my install cd box and found my old Ubuntu 5.10 install cd. This installed without a hitch with a minor problem, the touchpad’s vertical scroll doesn’t work. But I’m ok with it. I’m using the mouse most of the time. I think I’ll stick with Ubuntu 5.10 until the screen locking issue is fixed.
When after I’ve setup my development environment, my internet connection went dead. And it’s only late in the afternoon that I notice, it’s friday the 13th. All in all, I had zero productivity yesterday.
