Moving WordPress Data to Another Host

I just changed web host. I can’t take prolonged daily downtimes. Downtimes for server maintenance is understandable. Doing it daily isn’t. I still have 2 sites to move. They can probably wait a day or two.

Exporting and Importing data from WordPress was painless. At first, I was thinking of using the builtin export/import feature of WP only to find out it has a maximum upload limit of 2MB. I have a 16MB XML file from the using the export feature. I could’ve hack it a little to accommodate the size but exporting to SQL using phpMyAdmin was easier.

Everything was setup in the new host befor I changed the DNS entry. So if you’re reading this, then DNS info has already propagated to other servers.

    Hey Kates,

    I only see 6 comments at http://katesgasis.com/2007/03/18/weird-404s-by-sideblog/

I know there were more than that a few days ago – probably related to the host migration.. I’ve got some feedback I wanted to share with you but I posted a comment today that didn’t show up. Additionally, I got an email notification that you posted a comment there too but even that isn’t viewable. I hope this comment works; and I hope this information help you.

I see new comments right away in the dashboard except the comment count in the index page is not updated right away. But they do appear after a couple of minutes. My guess is that my new host is caching the pages.

Ah yes you’re right, a simple refresh didn’t do it for me I had to tell my browser not to use the cache (ctrl+F5).

Hey there – I use your wonderful KGarchives plugin. Just wondering – who was your previous webhost with the downtime? I’m in the computer business and I like to know who to recommend and who to stay away from when it comes to this.

    Thanks

Philhosting.net. They’re one of those cheap hosting companies that services our country. I went with them two years ago because they’re the only one offering payment thru bank deposits. I think I’ve outgrown their offers now. Besides I need to host my other sites and projects.

Hey Kates – I see – well I’m with 1and1 hosting and have been pretty happy with them. And the price is definitely right – $2.50 to $5 for a very DECENT package – good amount of bandwidth and disk space. If you’re thinking about signing up, go through my website (click my name on the comment which will take you there) – and please click my 1&1 link on there. I get credit for any referals. Knock-on-wood – they are huge – and hardly ever down. Plus they have a 800 call-in support number to boot.

Just curious, who’s your new webhost? I’m scouting for a good, reliable webhost better than Dreamhost. I’ve heard about 1and1 and from what K Russell has mentioned I think they’re a good option. :)

I’m hostmonster.com now for all my sites. They’re the cheapest I can find with a ssh access and can host unlimited domains. So far so good. But I won’t trust them with a high traffic site. And like KRussel I’ll earn something if you’ll signup through me. :)

So, I wasnt the only one experiencing those downtimes. My blog is still hosted at PhilHosting.net, the had been these terrible frequent downtimes on daily basis and I am really thinking of moving.

Just like Kate’s reason, I signed up for philhosting.net because it allows payment through banks. (having no paypal is such a pain)

I have a question, if you dont mind, what will happen to my domain name registered through Philhosting.net if I wanted to move to another webhost. Can I still keep my domain name and register it under a new webhost?

    Thanks in advance!

    K Russell Says:

Yes Karlo, you should be able to ‘transfer’ your domain name (registrar) to your new webhost. Plus, you may be aware, but Paypal ACCEPTS a bank account for payment – so that could solve your problem should your new host at least accept Paypal.

By the way, Kate, I think I thanked you before – but just in case – thank you for your Archives Plugin. It still works great and does a good job of organizing my post archives! :)

    Good luck.

    Hi Kates,

Just wanna ask you regarding uptimes with Hostmonster. I’ve shopping around for a new webhost as I’m not satisfied with my current webhost.

    Kates Gasis Says:

Hostmonster have downtimes. I’ve already experience a couple. I guess this is what we get with cheap shared hosting. But in the case of hostmonster, I can live with flaws as they give me more freedom/space/bandwidth than conventional shared hosting providers. I think hostmonsters downtimes are a result of scheduled server maintenance because I usually experience them around the same hour each time.

Also hostmonster aggressively cache your pages so sometimes when their server restart due to maintenance, it will inadvertently load an outdated version of the site. I just log in and do a little update (like blog posting) to refresh the cache. No data is actually lost.

In conclusion, hostmonster is pretty much like other shared hosting providers only they’re a notch higher with the feature. I went for the big disk space as an online backup for my photos.

    K Russell Says:

    Kate and Jaypee,

I don’t seem to experience these downtimes you guys mention with my 1&1 webhosting. And you can’t really beat $2.50 to $5 per month – depending on the package you choose. Their limits are outstanding – and load times good too.

These guys are big – they advertise in Pc Magazine (which is where I first heard about them). Plus they have an 800 number you can call for support if you want (which I have a couple times – always friendly).

If you check them out, please use my affiliate link:

Philhosting are just thiefs and nothing else, the have to many downtimes and they will say they didnt have them.
They do not reply in most of the time within 24 hours.
Never deal with this bunch of crap, they sell you something, and when you look at your account panel you will see that it is not what you pay for.
    Never again this Hoster thief

    Hi,
While trying to find a solution for my problem, I stumbled upon your blog. It seems we can export data larger than 2MB.
I have a problem. I am shifting from blogger to my own domain with WordPress software. Now WP allows only 2MB file size whereas mine is 5 MB. Can we do part export/import.
I know nothing about CSS but can try to change under guidance.

Can you please guide me what & how to do it ?

    Kates Gasis Says:

    @Cuckoo

WP has import feature in the Manage->Import panel. First on the list is Blogger. Although, I haven’t tried importing from Blogger, I think it will automate everything after you have authorize WP to blogger.
